Cartografía barroca y la retórica del discurso Teoría/Práctica,
núm. 3, 1996, Universidad de Alicante Baroque cartography and the rhetoric of
discourse.
Both discourse
and science build reality, the quality of experimentation, the effects of
demonstration, the consistency of theory and its scientific value. The study
of the ‘golden period in cartography’ during the 17th century in Western
Europe shows how much science and rhetoric devices are related. Our wok deals
with the graphic and iconographic discourses from two illustrated maps:
Mapamundi (1606) and Le Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas (1635), created,
printed and edited by Willem J. Blaeu in Amsterdam. Blaeu was one of the most
remarkable geographers from that modern period and succeeded in establishing
the model of Gerard Mercator, which prevails nowadays as common reference.
Nevertheless, cartography can be considered not only as the reflection of the
world but also its construction, depending on the scientific instruments and
the rhetoric means that man decides to use. The new geography, that emerges
in the Renaissance and strengthens with the visual arts in the baroque,
allows us to enlighten that thesis and to consider such a suggestive
combination of technology, myths and
prejudices.
3, marzo de 2002; http://www.um.es/tonosdigital/znum3) Discursive fallacies on the
Great Lakes conflict This paper goes over a dramatic social issue: the refugees in the
crisis of Zaire and Rwanda (November and December, 1996). Based on the
perspective of critical discourse analysis (CDA), that takes into account the
insight that discourse is structured by power and ideology, our work is
focused on texts and pictures
published in the press in that period in order to show implicit
argumentation and structural relationships of control, dominance and
discrimination. The most relevant aspect of the present research is the
violation of some pragmatics rules. Discurso
político de una celebridad y análisis crítico del discurso (Revista de Llengua i Dret,
XII-1997) (“La política como conversación. Análisis de un
discurso de legitimación”, Revista digital Círculo. Ciencias de la
Información. Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 1999. http://www.ucm.es/info/circulo/no2) Political speech of a celebrity and
critical analysis of discourse. The object of
analysis of this paper is an interview with the, then, former judge and newly
elected member of parliament Baltasar Garzón, published in El País Semanal in
July 1993. The article, entitled “Garzón: the last of the boy scouts”, at the
same time deals with Baltasar Garzón’s present and future in a tone bordering
on the informal and serves as a justification of his personal and ideological
position. The main
aspects of the paper are the material to be analysed and the interpretative
viewpoint. On the one level there is the interview, in which the speakers
talk about political activities and the relationship between the media, the
law and democratic order. On another level, the author of the paper,
considering that any text is an unfinished process since the participation of
the reader is needed to acquire
meaning, applies the practices and principles of the critical discourse
analysis. This kind of analysis is an interdisciplinary branch of interpretation
by means of which researchers clarify the meaning of the discursive practices
of politicians and other figures in the media, with the scope of rousing the
awareness of those who bear their effects in the forms of pressure and power. After an introduction, the paper discusses the eight guiding
principles for activities carried out with critical discourse analysis,
explaining each of them in a separate section together with some comments on
the interview and the rhetorical procedures applied. Those eight principles
are as follows: critical analysis deals with social problems; power relations
are discursive; discourse constitutes society; discourse performs an
ideological task; discourse is historical; the relationship between text and
society is mediate; discourse analysis is interpretative and explicative; and
discourse is a form of social action. Notas sobre pragmática
del discurso político: Aseveraciones, promesas y veracidad (Oralia. Análisis del discurso oral, vol.
1, 1998) Notes on pragmatics of the political
speech: Asseverations, promises and veracity
The paper is a pragmatic
commentary of the public manifestations of a politician on the topic of the discursive
veracity. One has selected such manifestations of two interviews that
Baltasar Garzón maintained, at that time delegated by the PSOE, with
journalists of the Country in July of 1993 and March of 1994, before
returning to the judicial function in the National Hearing. They are the
statements of several turns of word that talk about the truth, the deceit or
the promise, and that takes to him to conc1ude with this proscription of the
lie in policy: “The on1y thing which people do not pardon [to the politician]
is the lie; it pardons the errors if they are explained to him (...) is never
necessary to lie, although costs; and if that is to be an ingenuous one in
policy, 1 am going to continue being it.” The artic1e comments the
totality of the metadiscursives statements, observes why they are comparable
to the principle of discursive veracity and distinguishes between
asseverations and promises, to conc1ude with an analysis on the coherence of
the sender. In this sense, it is examined the definitions of public roll that
are pronounced and it is collated with which paradoxically is a breach on the
part of the speaker from his dialogic code. Altogether, the objective of the
scrutiny is to present display the asseverations of a celebrity, the
political and judicial figure of Baltasar Garzón, to consider the complexity
that characterizes the question of the veracity. The conc1usion is that
Garzón incurs during the interview in seven infractions, that are not only to
be understood like indication of hypocrisy or mendacity, but like the
bankruptcy of a superficial thought, confused and reductive. The
investigation takes to formulate the following hypotheses. On the one hand,
which the fact to incur such infractions necessari1y is not fought with the
communicative effectiveness, probably because what counts it is the
persuasion in the reader of the deep ethical conscience that moves to the
orator. And by the other, that a cause of this contradictory meeting of
conceptual error and communicative fortune can arise indeed from the
evocation of oral and deprived topics, that is to say, of non critical and
informal topics that are inconsistent in a debate and neglected for a public
context. De retòrica. La comunicació persuasiva Barcelona,
Barcanova, 1993 Of Rhetoric. The persuasive communication
The speech is an instrument of transformation of the world and also of
influence on the others. The common item to these two aspects is the
persuasive communication, that the old ones denominated rhetoric. This it is
the subject of the book. After an historical vision, the author raises the
exciting and disquieting debate of the political use of the language and the
rhetoric. It also analyzes the influence of this discursive activity in the
conscience of the people. Retórica
interpersonal. Discursos de comunicación, dominio y afecto Barcelona, Octaedro, 1996 Interpersonal rhetoric. Speeches of
communication, dominion and affection
This is a pragmatic and rhetoric research based on three corpora,
extracted of the media communication, the interpersonal one and the personal
communication. The pertinence of a theory of the persuasion is investigated
in those speeches (Kenneth Burke) that consists of three modalities of action:
the presentation, and its sequels of identification and alienation; the
dominion, and the directive and reactive strategies; the affection, in its
forms of expression and feedback. The dialógicos factors that give account of
each one of those scopes are the sociability, the leadership and the
affectivity. The corollary of the analysis is the description of four
principles of the rhetoric, to the way of the pragmatic one: They are the
principles of the process, the reception, the test and the ethics, that the
pragmatic principia of the cooperation and the courtesy are confronted and
interre1ated in the book with, and also with the principles of the
interpersonal rhetoric of the assertiveness the empathy and the self-esteem. Calendaris

Cugat, 13 (XII-1998) 11-20. municipal calendar from Sant Cugat del
vallès, 1990-1998. memorable events and political agenda This paper
deals with the linguistic analysis of the calendars published by the city
council of Sant Cugat del Vallès (1990-1998). Several aspects of their
contents are considered: from the sociolinguistics point of view, the
terminology and the explanations provided; it examines as well the topics of
the iconographic contents, related to the production of ideological
identification to the past and the present of the city. This type of analysis
is an interdisciplinary branch of interpretation by means of which the
researcher clarifies the meaning of discursive practices in the town
political agenda, taking municipal calendars as a sample of the whole
production. Salutacions de la Democràcia en festes Gausac. Grup d’Estudis

celebration
The aim of
this article is to show the results of an study on feast celebrations, from
1977 to 1997, in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona). The paper focuses on two
aspects: pragmatic analysis of the corpora, greeting speeches, classified in
three genres (canon, circumstance and transgression); and the review of
political topics and comments about the production of ideological
identification in local community, from the beginning of the local democratic
transition. The field of local transition in Sant Cugat is broadly conceived
as the study, from a pragmatic point of view, considering the contents and
means of the discursive practices and their political values. Homenajes institucionales y literatura de papelera Anuari de

This paper deals with the linguistic
analysis of some institutional propaganda by the Generalitat de Catalunya,
the Catalonian autonomous Government, specifically the slogans from the
campaigns of 1999, “Catalonian, a country that grows”, and that of 1987, “We
are six million people”. The aim of the study is to show the features of the wastepaper basket literature —opposed
to the bookshop literature and to the grey literature—, in order to show how
well works the strategy of the homage and, finally, to evaluate the features
of that political publicity according to the gender of basket literature. Estilo y cortesía en el correo electrónico Tonos
Digital, número 6, diciembre de 2003, Universidad de Murcia (www.tonosdigital.com) Style and courtesy in the electronic mail
The communication by means of the network of Internet is a very active
and changing social phenomenon. The quantitative aspects are showy. In the
world, more than one hundred million telemechanic servants they offer
information to the users, because they lodge two billion pages Web or sites
of Internet. Yet, most of the information that circu1ates around Internet is
not in the pages but in the electronic mai1, that a 70% cover with the total
of information. To the previous thing it is necessary to add the qualitative
aspects of the network, that are most remarkable and than they talk about to
the new communicative situations and the opportunities of the languages in
this global web. But also to the good ways of the interlocutors, that is to
say, to the election of the appropriate registry and the style, to the
courtesy that there is to unfold and the intelligibility of the messages.
These good ways or netiquette have a field of application in the
communicative situations that Internet contributes, that is the electronic
mail, the groups of conversation or chat, the surroundings of game in line
and the pages Web. Of these situations, we took care here of the mail, to
comment the habitual operations in its use and the effect of the courtesy in
its communications. Empiricism and rationalism in the linguistic one of 17th

With the
development of the Internet, four new communicative situations have
appeared: e-mail, Web pages, network games and group discussions. Each of
these is distinguished by some specific characteristics stemming from the
interaction of technology and the discursive genres of conversation and
interview. Group discussions offer the formats of chat rooms or conversation channels,
for instantaneous or synchronous communications, and discussion forums or
distribution lists, for asynchronous communication. This article introduces the Internet related communicative situations
mentioned above. Later, it analyzes the style and discursive characteristics
of group discussion formats. Chat rooms produce typed-in, oral language,
which manifests childlike, creative, groundbreaking characteristics, while
discussion forums adopt a hybrid standard-informal register. Consideration is
also given to the mediating or moderating aspects of the virtual forums. Chat
rooms require an automatic regulation mechanism, or bot, to control
the quality and the tone of the contributions. In the discussion group, on
the other hand, there is personal regulation, entrusted to the forum
moderator or webmaster, who establishes a code of behavior, supervises
compliance with the code, mediates in the discussions regarding proper
manners, authorizes the subscriptions and maintains the personal data of the
participants being respected their confidentiality. At the same time, forum
participants are subject to specific regulation -discussed briefly- in
their capacity as users of e-mail, which is their individual means of
connection with the forum. In the practical part of the article, different samples of messages
from a city-wide, social forum, the Fòrum Sant Cugat
«forum@stcugat.net» are reproduced and discussed. These messages deal with
good manners or netiquette and the controversies that arise in that
regard. One of these messages refers to formal offenses, i.e., those having
to do with length or propriety of expression. Another group contains contributions
that are critical of the content chosen or the way in which the content is
presented. And a third section presents the case of a violation of the
forum's privacy and its freedom of discourse. This came about when a message
was sent lo the press without its author's knowledge. The publication of the
text, which had a combative tone to it, led the person alluded to sue for
libel. Metadiscursive discussions are proof of the communicative dynamism of the virtual forums. In addition to the substantive messages, deliberations on good manners allow a language ethic to be represented and agreed upon. This ethic or behavioral code regulates the amount, the quality and the relevancy of the contributions of the forum participants. Paremiología y refranes de la Casa de Caritat de

en la red, , www2.uah.es/linred, pág 1-27, 10-05-04. Paremiology and proverbs from the “Casa
de Caritat” in Barcelona, from a pragmatic point of view This paper gathers a collection of proverbs
set as an ornamental motif at the old “Casa de Cartitat” (the Charity House,
in Barcelona) and analyzes its contents from a pragmatic point of view. The
house was one of the main charitable city organization in the 19th century. The collection consists
of nineteen proverbs, written in Catalan and set by means of glazed tiles on
the walls of the women’s courtyard of the Charity House. To set an example,
one of this proverbs says: “Sempre al vespre arribaràs amb alegria / si amb
profit has esmerçat el dia” (“You always will feel happy at the end of the
day / if you have spent your time in a profitable way”). By the middle of
20th century the building was closed, being restored later on for cultural
purposes. Nowadays such old proverbs, which have an explicit moral meaning,
can be still seen on the walls of the court. Thus, this paper analyses the
conceptual values of those proverbs and sets their textual typology. This
approach follows the theoretical proposal presented by Ramon Almela and Julia
Sevilla (2000) dealing with the linguistic analysis of proverbial texts. The
protagonists, the topics, the communicative function, indexicality and
connective modalities are the main subjects to be considered. The paper
suggests the interests of the historical and cultural background of those
proverbs, beyond their technical and discursive interpretation. Revista

of Spain, with a population of six million of people ant its main city is
Barcelona. The aim of the study is to expose the features of the wastepaper basket literature —opposed
to the bookshop literature and the grey literature—, to show how well works
the strategy of the homage and, finally, to evaluate the features of that
political advertising according to the gender of basket literature. The
article casts doubts over the idea of the public interest of some
